It is being reported that scientists have decoded the genome of the Pinot Noir grape - the first fruit and only second food item to be 100% mapped.
“Today’s event is agriculture’s equivalent of the first moonwalk,” said Riccardo Velasco, the head of the team that decoded the DNA sequences, at Monday’s press conference .
By decoding the Pinot Noir genome, it is hoped that scientists will be able to develop better pesticides that are targeted directly to the grape, without having adverse effects on the environment. This also sets the stage for direct comparisons between grape varietals as well.
Let’s all raise our glasses and have a drink (Pinot of course) to science.
