Fall Passport Day – November 19, 2005

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Mark your calendars! The Fall Passport day is coming soon. This is your chance to visit some of the wineries that we have (and will be) been covering here to sample their wine for yourself. Make sure to tell them that we sent you!

“Fall Passport Day!

Visit Wineries Not Normally Open to the Public
November 19, 2005

40 Wineries ~ 4 Restaurants Only $25 Is that a deal or what?

Meet the Winemakers! Vineyard Tours! Barrel Sampling!

We invite you to explore our extraordinary region and become acquainted with the incredible diversity of the wines and winemakers therein. Passport wineries will be open 4 times a year consecutively on the third Saturday of January, April, July and November, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Each season brings something new to the vineyards; from pruning in the winter to crush in the fall, wineries are bustling with activity year-round! Passport is your opportunity to meet the talented winemakers of the Santa Cruz Mountains and to see where and how they produce some of the world’s great wines.

Some of our wineries are not open to the public except on Passport days and many pour special wines or barrel samples on these days. A lot of these wines are simply not available anywhere else, so if you find a wine that you like, please buy a bottle or two. Without sales, these special tastings cannot take place.

During your day of wine tasting be sure to satisfy your appetite at any of the participating Restaurants that are currently offering Passport holders discounts to dine with them on Passport Day.

At each winery/restaurant you visit, a page of your Passport will be given a unique commemorative stamp.
Although there is a prize for completing the Passport, the true reward is discovering and enjoying the great wines along the way. Take as long as you like. We will honor completed Passports for as long as the program endures, hopefully for many, many years.

Passports remain good until you visit each participating winery

There is NO EXPIRATION on the Passports!
Passports are available for purchase for $25 by calling 831/479-9463,
or you may purchase a Passport at any one of the participating wineries on the day of the event.

If you will be tasting with a large group, please call the wineries you plan to visit to let them know, as some are very small and will be happy to plan accordingly.”

Episode 3! Silver Mountain Winery

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

Today we take a tour of the Silver Mountain Winery (http://www.silvermtn.com), and sample some wines. We also talk about Souldier of Fortune which is the music that we used in the beginning and end of our Podcast. We also discuss the Passport Program of the Santa Cruz Mountains Wine Growers Association. During our Passport Day, Silver Mountain had a vertical tasting which we found very interesting and allowed us to compare different vintages of the same style of wine.

Vertical Tasting – A vertical tasting involves wines from different vintages but all the wines will come from the same winery. If the winery produces more than one type of wine, you would select a single wine from that winery and taste multiple vintages of that wine. For instance, you might have 4 vintages (1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002) of Chardonnay. When you hold a Vertical tasting, you are learning more about the differences between different vintages rather than the differences in wineries or styles.

The wines that we reviewed are:

  • 2001 Chardonnay (Estate, organically grown, $20 bottle)
  • 2000 Alloy (Bordeaux Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Verdot $24 bottle)
  • Finally, we have added some additional photos to our blog, courtesy of Flickr.
